It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Dexter W. Shurney, MD, MPH, MBA, DipABLM, FACLM, a pioneering figure in lifestyle medicine. Dr. Shurney, age 67, of Grants Pass, Oregon, passed away on December 1, 2025, at a licensed residential care facility in Medford, Oregon.
His profound contributions to the field and his unwavering commitment to health equity have left an indelible mark on clinicians, patients, and communities worldwide. Dr. Shurney’s dedication to lifestyle medicine was unparalleled.
As a founding member of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine (ABLM), he helped shape the foundation of this growing medical specialty. His visionary leadership extended across numerous national organizations, influencing policies, partnerships, and practices that have advanced preventive health on a national scale.
Serving as President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) in 2018, Dr. Shurney championed initiatives that emphasized equitable access to healthcare. His advocacy for payment reform, innovative policy, and strategic partnerships helped establish the HEAL Initiative, a program that continues to improve health equity and expand the reach of lifestyle medicine across the United States.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions, ACLM has honored his legacy with the Dr. Dexter Shurney HEAL Award, established in perpetuity, and the HERO Dexter Shurney Fellowship, designed to support emerging leaders dedicated to health equity.
